ARROYO GRANDE HOME 8/09

Reorganize and Repair a large family home. See the before and after pics here!
God Moved A Mountain
For just over a week at the beginning of August, Brighten A Corner Ministry gathered together an amazing group of volunteers to completely transform the home of a family who has endured the loss of a precious 9 year old little boy. This past April Kailanii Brannum was swept away to sea while jumping on the rocks at Paradise Beach. It was unthinkable.
In response the community and the body of Christ came together to accomplish what seemed impossible. In way too little time, with nowhere near enough money, we put “loaves and fishes faith” into action. In eight days we:
• painted the inside and outside of the house,
• remodeled and repaired every bathroom,
• expanded the master bedroom and added a walk in closet and bathroom
• remodeled the kitchen,
• brought the home up to code,
• replaced most of the insulation,
• replaced the outdated heating system
• repaired the electrical in most of the house,
• installed all new flooring,
• redid the texture,
• replaced windows and doors,
• filled an empty swimming pool hole in the backyard and landscaped.
• With quite a bit of new furniture to go with it, the house became a beautiful home.
Contractors took the week off of work to make miracles happen. Landscapers worked in the evening and on the weekend to graciously meet the deadline. The tile work was completed by a number of fabulous tile companies who made each room beautiful and functional. Flooring installers spent hour after hour working, long before it was time to install the floor. The electrical work often felt endless. There was plumbing and more plumbing. There were interior walls and baseboards, exterior walls and fascia to be painted and endless piles of things that needed to be cleaned and organized before they came back into the house. Volunteer after volunteer showed up to do whatever was needed, whenever it needed to be done. It was truely amazing to see people working together for one common goal, with joy and a willingness to do what it took to get the job done in a mere 8 days!

OCEANO PROJECT 4/09

Oceano 5 Cities Rescue Mission Project
Here is the story:
This coming April we are teaming up with Just As I Am Ministries to serve the 5 Cities Rescue Mission. "The Rescue Mission is a place of comfort for those who do not have a place to lay their head at night or even the assurance of the next meal."
A few weeks before Christmas we took a beautiful Christmas tree and a huge box of decorations to the home for women with children, but are really looking forward to the BIG project coming up!
We will be putting in a huge vegetable garden to help provide food, redoing the sanctuary to help provide a place for worship, redecorating the office to provide a place for counsel, and landscaping the front of the house that it may always say "welcome." We are excited to be partnering with several local businesses to make this happen, and are praying that it will open doors to more funding and support from local churches.
Come join us!

SANTA MARGARITA 7/08

"We know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance character; and character hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit." Romans 5:4-5
Santa Margarita Outdoor Project Here is the story:
Mark and Wendy have a teenage son, a 9 year old daughter and a 4 year old daughter. In March of 2006, Mark had a severe brain aneurism rupture affecting 1/2 his brain. He was not supposed to live. As it is, he is completely confined to a wheel chair and is unable to speak. He has made strides--he can now feed himself, and (according to his family) seems to be able to understand many things. He laughs at jokes, and uses some sign language.
The amazing thing is that his wife totally cares for him at home. She treats him with a stunning amount of respect and dignity while she raises her kids and deals with the loss of her best friend. For work, she helps her parents run the DeGrut home for severely handicapped and terminally ill children in San Luis. She is the epitome of a giver.
Here is the project:
Mark's world has literally been shrunk to about .1% of what it once was, so we are seeking to expand his world as best we can. We are going to make their back yard entirely handicapped accessible so that they can get his wheel chair around easily and have him participate/watch/enjoy the activities of the family and the children. The unspoken hope is that the more "normal" things he can experience, the more stimulation he can get, the better chance there may be for some kind of continued improvements. We will be:
1.) Adding a side walkway around the house
2.) Changing a huge gravel square in the center of the yard into concrete, so that Mark can enjoy it
3.) Adding a shaded seating area where Mark can watch his kids on the trampoline and play structure
4.) Finishing the outside kitchen area
5.) Adding plants and landscaping that will help to reduce the need for upkeep
6.) Making the pool deck handicapped accessible
